It still baffles me that it took me until I was 14 to find the right music for me. While a lot of people I went to middle school and high school with listened to rap and hip-hop, or whatever was considered “cool,” I found my musical calling, if you will, in metal and decided to expand my taste to other bands over time. I never would have guessed that I’d rock out to this stuff when I was 14 rather than screaming “What’s this crap?” Even though I primarily listen to bands such as Disturbed and All That Remains, among others, I still have to give Metallica so much credit for my love for metal. My iTunes library is flooded with quite a bit of metal music. If I had not decided to get a copy of Ride the Lightning that night, I would not be listening to the music I listen to today. I was focused on the overall quality to the point where its messages never crossed my mind at the time. In other words, they launched “thrash metal.”Ĭould Metallica’s so-called obsession with violence and death become a cause for concern for some people in regards to this album? Yes, but it never bothered me from the minute I played the album for the first time. In retrospect, Metallica brought a new version of metal to the table, with an extremely fast tempo and phenomenal guitar work in just about every song. If it weren’t for Metallica, bands such as Lamb of God and Bullet For My Valentine probably wouldn’t exist today. What some people tend to forget is that Metallica is arguably one of the most influential metal bands to walk on stage in the past 25-30 years. I eventually got a Metallica T-shirt because of my appreciation for these men with mullets. From the title track to “Trapped Under Ice,” there were numerous songs I fell in love with. I discovered some catchy, intense and entertaining content in this album. Right off the bat, I was hooked on the album. So I went in and purchased Ride the Lightning, and it was probably one of the smartest decisions I’ve ever made in my life. My brother, Kevin, generated a list of ideas for bands to consider giving a chance, which, surprisingly, included Metallica. One night, I decided to go to Best Buy to find some new music. I was looking for new music to lend my ears, and let’s just say that Ride the Lightning was a bit of an accident. Up until I first listened to the 1984 Metallica album Ride the Lightning, I pretty much did not listen to much music, other than albums like The Pulse, a generic dance album, or whatever else was considered “popular” in the early 2000s. Try listening to the song with that scene in mind, it almost makes it humorous.Īnyways, love metallica, im out.In 2003, my musical taste changed forever - in a good, unexpected way. I could go on but i dont feel like typing an essay. Electrocution, it doesnt sound so bad when you phrase it that way. The title of "ride the lightning" to me, comes from his need to make his execution feel badass. And as his last day of sorts he wants to be as troublesome as possible. "This cant be happening to meee" "flash before my eyes" Hes sitting there in his cell with the guards outside, trying to get a rise out of them, anything. The way james's voice inflection in this song sounds to me. I imagine a man on death row sentenced to the electric chair, and on his day of death, hes trying to create a scene. Lmao, i cant believe this site is still around.Īmongst other obvious interpretations on here, being framed, etc i have an alternate scenario that comes to mind whenever i hear this song. Zeus on a skateboard, thats fucking great.
